The name Chillicothe is derived from the Shawnee Chala-ka-tha. European settlers arrived in the area near the end of the American Revolution. Chillicothe served as the state capital from the beginning of Ohio’s statehood in 1803 until 1810. It became the state capital again in 1812, but lost the distinction in 1816.
