Although the city is named for the Delaware tribe, it was founded on a Mingo village called Pluggy’s Town. While the first recorded settler was in the area in 1807, the official founding of the city was in 1808 when a plan of the city was filed. In 1812, Delaware was a close second to Columbus in choosing the new state capitol. Delaware is also the birthplace of President Rutherford B. Hayes.
